Set within the Gateway, a contemporary base to the office tower above, Tokyo Laundry has a combined total area of 355m2, two third of which is internal dining, and one third shopfront dining. The layout allows for 180 seated patrons – a small to medium sized bar, casual dining spots and a more formal eatery towards the back with its own private dining space, tucked behind bespoke linen curtains.
The client has engaged us to create a brief based on their fundamental values – uniqueness, functionality and sophistication.
The layout is long and narrow with a wall of glazing looking out to the lawn below. We have the option to leave a portion of the ceiling in the main dining open, which has resulted extra height within a confined space. Exploiting both of these opportunities, we have celebrated them with fabric and light installations to glow from the inside out: a dark colour palate of deep purple tones, with hints of black and red.
The interior is a mix of Japanese and contemporary design; soft linen curtains, dark stained timer, rust veined stone, antique brass, batten dividing walls, and steel framed elements.
